Semmering went Zipflbob crazy this weekend when the iconic sledges took to the slopes on Saturday, 16 January. The "Superglüh Zipflbob Challenge" allows racers in teams of three to take on rival teams for the chance to be crowned 'Zipflbob King of the Mountain'.
The races took place at Semmering for the second time this year. The weather was perfect, the crowd cheerful and the track was in perfect condition after being prepared until the late hours on Friday. All hard work paid off as the event was hailed a roaring success.
Among the race's participants was Thomas Kicker, the boss of the phone company Tele.ring, which was the main sponsor of the event. Mr. Kicker visibly enjoyed the wicked turns and bumps of the race track.
Spokesman Peter Wurzinger said: "This year we added a rule about teams of three to make sure even beginners have a chance to win the race. The finale was carried out in "cross mode", meaning that four contestants of different teams race down the course’s sharp turns at the same time." Four teams reached the finale at 5 p.m under floodlit conditions.
The four quickest Zipflbob contestants then competed against each other to determine the quickest Zipflbober and determine who would become champion.
When the racing was finsihed the party lights were ignited at the Aprés Zipflbob Party at the ZauberBAR to ensure the evening went out with a bang and it certainly did. Much fun was had by all as they partied to the wee small hours. Christoph Stadler and Markus Merz, head of marketing of the Semmering ski region were very satisfied with the event: "It was a great success. We are very pleased with the progress and are already looking forward to the race next year."
